# Action Items

# Action Items

Action items are tasks and commitments that get created during meetings, tied to goals, or assigned during performance reviews. They help translate conversations into concrete next steps and ensure follow-through.

## What action items are

An action item in Topicflow is a trackable task with:

* A clear description of what needs to be done
* An assignee responsible for completion
* An optional due date
* A connection to where it was created (meeting, goal, review, etc.)
* A status (open, completed, or archived)

Action items appear in multiple places throughout Topicflow, making them visible where they matter most.

## Where action items come from

Action items can be created in several ways:

**During meetings** — Most action items originate in one-on-ones or team meetings. As you discuss progress, blockers, or next steps, you can create action items directly from the meeting notes.

**From goals** — When working on a goal, you can create action items to break down the work into smaller tasks. These items stay connected to the goal, making progress visible.

**In performance reviews** — Reviewers can assign action items as development tasks or follow-ups based on review feedback.

**Standalone** — You can also create action items independently, outside of any specific context.

## Why action items matter

Action items create accountability between meetings. Instead of relying on memory or scattered notes, both manager and direct report can see what was committed to and track completion.

When action items are tied to meetings, goals, or reviews, they create a thread of context. You can see why a task exists, what it's connected to, and how it fits into larger objectives.

## How action items connect to the rest of Topicflow

Action items don't live in isolation:

* **Meetings**: Action items from one-on-ones surface in the next meeting's agenda, making it easy to review progress
* **Goals**: Action items linked to goals show up in goal views, helping track execution
* **Reviews**: Completed action items demonstrate follow-through and can inform performance assessments
* **Topicflow AI**: The AI assistant can reference action items when preparing for meetings or summarizing recent work
